Service to others is the foundation of my being and has been at the center of my personal and professional life for decades. Two quotes from Robert Greenleaf (the author of Servant Leadership) capture how I understand this value:
“The servant-leader is servant first. It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead.”
“The best test of a servant leader is: Do those served grow as persons? Do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants?”
The essence of coaching is not providing guidance and direction; it requires listening from the depths of one’s being. Deep listening is a form of radical presence; it involves hearing both what is said and not said, and accessing the whole worldview and way of being that lies behind the words being spoken. This kind of listening is the foundation that makes all other facets of coaching possible.
Hold BOTH Love AND Power
I ground my coaching in unconditional love for each client. I hope to provide all of my clients with an experience of acceptance, dignity, and respect. I have come to realize, though, that love on its own is not enough; anyone who seeks to create change at any level from self to society must fully own their power. They must embrace their existential freedom to choose their own path and manifest their vision in the world. I have learned that trying to work with one of these forces while ignoring the other is a profound mistake. Dr. Martin Luthor King explained this best: “Love without power is sentimental and anemic; power without love is reckless and abusive.”
I believe in human goodness. I believe that individuals can change themselves for the better. I believe that communities can be improved. I believe that we can make our lives a blessing to others. I believe that the fate of the world is not yet sealed, and in this critical moment we each have a sacred opportunity to tip the scales of history towards the light. I see the dark forces and deep injustices in the world, and believe in an idealism that does not represent a naive ignorance of how the world works or lack of awareness of the privileges that have made my journey easier than others. This is a realistic idealism, grounded in a lifetime of seeing beauty and goodness blossom at the grassroots and front lines, where darkness and cynicism are most present.
Details matter. Execution matters. I strive to achieve excellence in all facets of managing my coaching business and stewarding my resources, as I know that the administrative and operational facets of business are part of–not separate from–the work of being an effective coach. I ask all my clients to strive for excellence over the course of the work we do together as well.
My Personal Mission
My mission is to practice courage and compassion in honoring–and helping others to honor–the sacred interdependence of our world.
My Shadow Mission
A Shadow Mission clearly articulates the choices I make and the ways that I show up if I am NOT acting in alignment with my mission.
My shadow mission is to settle for cowardice and disconnecting while ignoring–and helping others to ignore–the sacred interdependence of our world.
